This companion page to the American PBS Frontline program Education in the Digital Age focusses on the use of Google technologies and 1 to 1 computing in a school in New York another at Chatham High School. The site includes classroom video footage as well as interviews with teachers and students and links to resources from the school. The need for teachers to challenge students with relevant tasks whilst acknowledging that students can and will multi-task in ways that traditional classroom practice can’t meet is graphically demonstrated. The program also points out the disconnect between what some teachers hope their students are doing in relation to their school tasks and the reality of what students are really doing. Particularly telling are the admissions by one student that he would love to read Shakespeare but he instead uses web based summaries and the teacher who whilst still “fighting the good fight” acknowledges that “her time is over”.
