Hi Graham,

There's a double edged sword in your comment, it's good to know that others have problems drawing an audience for these events but it's tragic to think of the possible consequences for the families that don't just get the need to at least be aware of the real issues as opposed to those hyped up in the media. Perhaps we should adopt this approach from a school in the US which advertised the following:

Working Together To Keep Our Children

Sexting and Internet Crimes against children has become an epidemic that is growing at an alarming rate. This presentation gives parents vital information to help keep their children safe from internet predators. It is a very informative presentation and a must for parents of children of all ages.

*The information given in this presentation is very graphic with adult
content.*

It is recommended that students/children do not attend.

John, sadly this is not an aberration. I've run sessions after hours that attracted more staff out of loyalty than interested parents. Then yesterday we had an open morning at my school - parents everywhere. We had a morning tea in the Gym to be followed by me doing a presentation about how technology is used for learning in our school. When it was announced that my session was starting the fifty odd parents chatting and eating a few minutes earlier rapidly dwindled down to about twenty. The ones who stayed were great and appreciated what I had to say but well, who know why the others didn't want to stick around.

Nice! I use another site similar to keep up on the latest lingo. It's called Urban Dictionary. You can find the latest pop culture and slang references there. You can even have featured words emailed to you daily. It's listed here under TeachHUB's teacher recommended websites: http://www.teachhub.com/recommendations/search?page=4

Hi John...thanks for mentioning our site. Congrats on the iPhone. It's a gadget I'm quite addicted to. I was reading your post and i thought i might help you out with your app dilemma.
You are correct, there are sooo many apps...becomes almost impossible to find good ones. Here are some that I have personally tried and i recommend:

If you are looking for apps for your son i recommend these, many have free versions to try:

-Pocket god (not really educational but kids love it)
-Word Magic and Chicktionary (basic spelling games)
-LightBike (a little more difficult but great for problem solving skills)
-Archibald's Adventures
-Bounce On (move a bouncing ball through obstacles)
-Crash Bandicoot Kart 3D
-Amateur Surgeon (operation style game, kids love this one)
-doodlebug (drawing app)
-UNO
-chalky

For yourself:
-iXpenseit (great finance app)
-grocery gadget
-appbox Pro (has unit converter, currency converter, loan calculator, translator...list goes on)
-Evernote, google reader, google books, dictionary.
-metlink (if you use the Melbourne transport system)
-tomtom (a bit pricey but does everything the gps does)
-remote (control your itunes library on your PC from your iPhone)
-skype, twitterena, facebook
-SplashId (for password storing)
-for games Topple 2, monopoly, need for speed, UNO, ifighter.
- Koi Pond to relax.

You can find videos on all of these apps on our site. Hope this helps you out and good luck with the iphone.

Hi Lillian, what a fabulous resource you have created. There is so much interesting material embedded into the wiki it is going to take me soo much time to check it all out. Just a suggestion, as well as the Home page splash it would help new viewers such as me to have an About Page to explain how the site functions and what members can do.
Cheers John P

Dear sir,

As a colleague of the aforementioned colleague, I was also surprised and a little confused to read the advice sent via this email.
My first disappointment is that it undoes the good skills and work many of our students have obtained over the past 12 months in regards to Flickr. Many (not all) students are using the terms 'creative commons' in their general discussions when working with images in their computer lab sessions. This has taken a long time, but it has been something (until now) our school has repeatedly reminded our students about; using Flickr to find pictures that are available for use. Not once have we had a student use the technology or the website for inappropriate use.

We still have a long way to go because students resort to Google images for other projects such as researching a foreigh country or person. With the grade 5 students using their own netbooks, it is hard to stop this happening. Although we discuss prior to projects starting that they must NOT use other's images that are not referenced, when they can't find anything else they quickly resort to these images when under pressure to complete set work.

It is disappointing to read a email such as this. I'm not sure where to go to next with this proposal.

Cheers.

When software changes it is overwhelming. The new version of MS Office, which is so radically different from the previous version, is a classic example.

Unfortunately regardless of whether it is web 2.0 technology, or desktop software, or our mobile phones technology is constantly, and rapidly, being improved.

We were aware how different this version was and timed it so the upgrade occurred when it would cause the least disruption to the most users.
